Educators bemoan the low level of writing skills in today’s students. Debates about how to teach writing and grammar swing from traditional methods of lesson drills and rote memorization to whole language approaches that attempt to create meaningfulness by teaching sentence structure and writing skills through the students’ own compositions. However, a key component must be understood in combination with both: students must be motivated to learn to write through instruction aligned with how their brains process information and make associations already stored in long-term memory.

This article in The Economist details the current conflict in which Israelis and Palestinians have once again goaded each other to the brink of war in the Holy Land. According to this article, though they make up 38% of Jerusalem’s population, most local Palestinians are not citizens but “residents,” granted access to health care and social security – but not the same rights as Jews. Palestinians in the wider West Bank, like those in Jerusalem, have watched Israel confiscate land and build settlements on occupied territory, which is illegal under international law, the article says.
