Rice University Becomes 200th Institution to Select Ex Libris Leganto to Enhance Support for Remote Teaching and Learning

Ex Libris, a ProQuest company, is pleased to announce Rice University has signed an agreement with implement the company’s Leganto course resource list solution.

CHICAGO, IL, July 21, 2020 – Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, is pleased to announce that Rice University has signed an agreement with Ex Libris to implement the company’s Leganto® course resource list solution. Rice is the 200th institution to select the Leganto solution to support the increased role of library resources in the physical and virtual classrooms.

Rice University’s library anticipates that during the 2020-2021 academic year, the use of printed course reserves will not be feasible because of the necessary shift to online learning. Instead, Rice library staff and faculty members will collaborate using the Leganto solution, discovering electronic resources and making them available through the university’s Canvas learning management platform. The university aims to maximize the use of the resources to which it subscribes and, when acquiring new electronic assets, to seek open-access (OA) content and open educational resources (OER).

The Leganto solution will extend the role of the library in online teaching and learning by supporting course resource needs, maintaining textbook affordability through library-owned resources and pay-per-use copyright licensing models, and encouraging faculty to make the most of course reserves services.

The Leganto resource list solution is built on the Ex Libris higher-ed platform, and so it will work smoothly with the Ex Libris Alma® library services platform and Primo® discovery and delivery solution already in use at Rice University. The integrated workflows within the Ex Libris higher-ed platform and the integration of Leganto with the university’s Canvas platform will enable faculty members to quickly discover resources that the library owns or subscribes to and add them to the learning management system in shareable resource lists. Detailed analytics and reports will show which assets are in demand and will also highlight valuable but under-used assets. Other Leganto features will encourage students to discuss, recommend, and share resources.

“In the current and future academic environment, it is a tremendous advantage to have a holistic solution for creating lists of course-assigned materials that integrate with both our library system and the learning management system,” said Rice University’s Director of Library Technology Denis Galvin. “The Leganto solution will put everything into one place, enabling our faculty and students to benefit from seamless access to course resources and increasing the library's impact on student success.”

“Ex Libris is delighted to welcome Rice University to our rapidly growing Leganto user community,” commented Eric Hines, president of Ex Libris North America. “The 2020 pandemic has brought academia to the tipping point. Rice is joining many other university libraries that have been using Leganto to ease the transition to online learning.”
