University of Turku Gets Access to 75 Primary Source Databases from ProQuest®

Faculty and students at the University of Turku now have access to 75 online multidisciplinary resources from ProQuest.

CAMBRIDGE, UK, June 11, 2019 – Faculty and students at the Finland-based University of Turku now have access to 75 online multidisciplinary resources from ProQuest. It’s the first university in the Scandinavian region to adopt this expansive selection of primary sources – the same sources that are staples in the world’s most prominent academic libraries.

Turku, an internationally known research institution and member of the Coimbra Group of multidisciplinary universities, now has access to core collections such as the Art & Architecture Archive, British Periodicals, Early European Books, an extensive selection of historical newspapers, periodicals, global studies databases and many more.

The university chose these databases after an in-depth analysis of their curriculum using a model developed by ProQuest. The analysis identifies gaps and offers specific examples of databases that could be used by students and faculty, ultimately helping the university acquire exactly what it needs to improve research, teaching and learning outcomes.

Turku will also benefit from an evidence-based acquisition model that enables the library to dramatically expand access to primary sources overnight while steadily building their owned collections based on usage. This will help them stay within budget and support the need for both immediate access and long-term ownership.

“This acquisition model gives us a chance to give our customers many resources to work with at an affordable cost,” said Erik Lindgren, Information Specialist at Turku University Library. “We will then be able to use the statistics to see which resources would most likely be also used in the future – helping us make decisions about acquiring content for the coming years.”

“Primary sources help students develop the writing, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills their future employers require," said Tony Nercessian, ProQuest Regional Sales Director. “ProQuest is proud to work with the first university in Scandinavia to invest in these essential resources. We believe this elevates the University of Turku with the provision of critical, multidisciplinary primary-source content.”
