Ex Libris to Upgrade Its Primo and Summon Indexes, Consolidating Them into a Unified Central Discovery Index

Ex Libris, a ProQuest company, is pleased to announce the creation of the Central Discovery Index (CDI), a robust, comprehensive content index that will expand the capabilities of the Summon and Primo discovery services.

JERUSALEM, Israel, April 29, 2019 – Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, has announced the creation of the Central Discovery Index (CDI), a robust, comprehensive content index that will expand the capabilities of the Ex Libris Summon® and Primo® discovery services. The CDI will enrich users’ discovery experience across both flagship discovery services, enabling libraries to better support researchers’ needs through smart discovery services driven by artificial intelligence.

The discovery environment is evolving rapidly, with content indexes that need to contain an ever-increasing quantity of new materials and resource types. With its advanced design, the CDI will enable Primo and Summon libraries to successfully meet new discovery challenges while maintaining data quality and content neutrality.

Aligned with the roadmaps of the Primo and Summon discovery services, the unified index will enable customers of both services to benefit from faster update cycles, improved content ingestion, enhanced relevance ranking, and one-time activation of content. The CDI will also be instrumental in the development of new user-centric services that will improve discovery and the access to library collections.

The new Central Discovery Index is designed to provide a smooth, seamless upgrade for all customers. It will be rolled out gradually, beginning in the third quarter of 2019, with the majority of Summon and Primo customers already benefiting from it in 2020. With the CDI, Ex Libris will upgrade the infrastructure that is currently in place for both delivery services. More information about the CDI can be found in the Summon CDI Overview and Primo CDI Overview articles in the Ex Libris Knowledge Center.

“The Ex Libris Central Discovery Index is a key component of our discovery strategy and will provide customers with a future-ready content index,” explained Shlomi Kringel, Ex Libris corporate vice president of discovery and delivery solutions. “The CDI will provide opportunities for developing innovative discovery features for both the Summon and Primo solutions, leveraging artificial intelligence to create additional smart services.”
