University of Sydney Selects Ex Libris Alma and Primo

Ex Libris, a ProQuest company, is pleased to announce the University of Sydney has selected the Alma library services platform and Primo discovery and delivery solution.

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA, August 14, 2018 – Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, is pleased to announce that the University of Sydney has selected the Ex Libris Alma® library services platform and Primo® discovery and delivery solution to improve the visibility and accessibility of the university’s unique, extensive collections and provide greater integration and interoperability capabilities for behind-the-scenes library management.

Scheduled to be implemented for the 2019 school year, the Alma-Primo integration will help the university address the changing requirements of its community and gain experience with emerging technologies, service models, and skills. The new library solutions will consolidate the library’s position as a leading, future-focused library with expertise in areas such as resource sharing, RFID technology, metadata management, research partnerships, round-the-clock access through self-service technologies and mobile apps, the digitization of rare and special collections, collection benchmarking and promotion, easy-to-use discovery, and the provision of online learning.

Anne Bell, the Director of University Libraries at the University of Sydney, explained, “The library is central to the mission of the University of Sydney, which was founded in 1850 as Australia’s first university. Our goal is to create and disseminate knowledge and skills and enable the brightest researchers and the most promising students, whatever their social or cultural background, to thrive and realize their potential. In today’s rapidly changing environment, we can redefine the 21st-century research library by anticipating the needs of our community, as our leadership in the use of RFID demonstrates. We are excited at the opportunity to replace our current library management system with the next-generation, cloud-based Ex Libris technologies, used by more than a thousand libraries around the world.”

Ziv BenZvi, vice president of Ex Libris Asia Pacific, commented, “We are delighted that the University of Sydney has selected the Alma library services platform along with Primo discovery. A leader in the use of technology to the benefit of students and researchers, the University of Sydney will be a valuable member of our Australian Alma and Primo communities.”

About the University of Sydney

Founded in 1850, the University of Sydney was Australia’s first university. It comprises three University schools and six faculties. It offers a diverse range of courses to a student population of more than 60,000 and has over 8,300 staff members. The University is currently ranked 42nd in the world and third in Australia according to the QS World University Rankings, and our graduates are ranked the most employable in Australia and the fourth most employable in the world according to the QS Graduate Employability Rankings.

Our library’s journey began in earnest with the generous bequest in 1885 of £30,000 from the estate of the late Thomas Fisher, retired bootmaker and property investor, to be used "in establishing and maintaining a library." Today the University’s library, which exists beyond the walls of our physical presence on campus, is one of the largest libraries in the southern hemisphere. From rare books and extensive print collections to wide-ranging electronic resources and research data, our library provides the scale and depth necessary for a leading research-intensive university.
