In December 2013, eContent Quarterly published a review of New York University’s (NYU) ebook dual-hosting strategy. The article details NYU’s motivations, considerations, challenges, and more, while supporting a global research community with a quickly changing electronic landscape. In particular, NYU has worked with ebrary, and other publishers and partners, since 2007 to devise a strategy and system that optimized ebook discovery and created a consistent experience for NYU’s users. The go-to solution was firstly hosting content in two places: the publisher platform, but more so on the NYU platform (effectively the ebrary platform customized for NYU) to allow a one-stop shop no matter where the content came from. NYU acquires mass amounts of backfile to replace print along with deals on frontlist content from top publishers that may not even be published yet, while supplementing with ongoing purchases and a subscription to ebrary’s Academic Complete.
