Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest, announced today that the Università di Palermo has selected the Summon™ web-scale discovery service and 360 Link to further increase the discoverability and access to its library collections. Università  di Palermo becomes the second university in Italy to adopt the Summon™ service.

"The Summon service increases the value of thousands of resources available in our digital library by ensuring they are easily discovered by our researchers and used to their full potential,” said Maria Stella Castiglia, head of the digital library for the Università di Palermo. “Summon’s Google-like search box offers a very simple, easy and user-friendly way to conduct a query across the breadth of our collection, and returns the results in one relevant list with many options for refining and filtering. Our mission is to simplify the entire research process for our users, and the Summon service, along with 360 Link, is a critical element in accomplishing this endeavor.”

Currently, the Summon service allows researchers to quickly and easily search content from more than 6,800 providers with more than 600 million records. The Summon service provides proven value to more than 200 libraries worldwide that subscribe to the service because it is a clear, comprehensive starting point for research, and helps ensure material in the library is easily discovered and used.

Powered by Serials Solutions KnowledgeWorks, 360 Link OpenURL link resolver provides fast and accurate access to the library’s e-resource collection by returning the most complete and accurate results available. 360 Link is also highly customizable, offering librarians the option to alter the order of databases and resource links, the display style of citations or how to integrate 360 Link with other management services. Serials Solutions 360 Link also offers an innovative citation management capability, which allows the service to integrate tightly with other library software and technology. According to Castiglia, “We really appreciate the ability to quickly and easily export to bibliographic management software packages, such as RefWorks, EndNote, ProCite and BibTeX. In addition, researchers are able to instantly convert their saved citations into six different formats, which makes the entire process trouble-free.”

“We are pleased that the University of Palermo will be able to maximize the use of its collection with the Summon service and 360 Link, while at the same time simplifying the process for researchers,” said Rob Mercer, vice president of global sales for Serials Solutions. “Serials Solutions is committed to providing the most comprehensive and relevant search experience, which allows library users across the globe to simply and easily discover the information they need to propel their research.”

Founded in 1806, Università di Palermo serves more than 60,000 students offering courses across 12 major disciplines. The University digital library subscribes to around 50,000 electronic journals and boasts a wealth of local and international content in its physical library.
