Cornell University Adopts Serials Solutions Summon™ Discovery Service

Serials Solutions®, a business unit of ProQuest® LLC, today announced that Cornell University Library is adopting the Summon™ service to improve the discoverability of its vast digital resources and library materials for its patrons.

SEATTLE – Oct. 19, 2011 – Serials Solutions®, a business unit of ProQuest® LLC, today announced that Cornell University Library is adopting the Summon™ service to improve the discoverability of its vast digital resources and library materials for its patrons. By utilizing the robust Summon™ application program interface (API), Cornell University will integrate the web-scale discovery service’s superior search functionality with other library applications and learning management systems. This will enable Cornell University to provide greater exposure to the full text of articles of all subscribed materials in addition to other relevant library collections.

“The most compelling reason for selecting Summon is that it offers a simple and intuitive full-text search of almost all our licensed content, offering a great starting point for research,” said Dean Krafft, Cornell University Library’s chief technology strategist and director of IT. “Because the Summon interface and its open API are so flexible, we will be able to develop an interface that effectively directs users to the complete range of library content. From the relevancy-ranked list of search results, users will be able to click through to full-text articles, as well as leveraging additional services, such as the ability to identify reference librarians who are experts and can assist in further propelling their research.”

The Summon™ service makes the library’s resources much easier to find and use, providing a channel for greater return on the library’s content investment. With the Summon™ service, researchers at Cornell University can directly access from a simple, library-branded search box both licensed journal content and over two million public domain volumes found in the  HathiTrust, a partnership-based digital library.

“Cornell University joins the more than 25 percent of Association of Research Libraries (ARL) academic library members that have chosen the Summon service to transform their institution’s search and discovery experience,” said John Law, vice president of discovery solutions with Serials Solutions. “We are very pleased that a prestigious institution such as Cornell has chosen Summon to further enhance its library experience for its patrons.”

More than 250 libraries and research institutions now subscribe to the Summon™ service, and many are seeing a substantial increase in the use of their library’s collections. As the library of a major research university with strengths in the life sciences, physical sciences, humanities and social sciences, Cornell University Library contains close to 8 million volumes, 8.5 million microforms, and over 750,000 electronic resources. These resources serve more than 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the Ivy League university.

Recognized as the Best Enterprise Search Solution at the 2011 CODiE Awards by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the Summon™ service offers the most compelling user experience by providing an easy and open discovery experience. With full text search for most content in its single unified index, the Summon™ service provides a superior discovery experience by allowing researchers to search across its more than 750 million records which are optimized for discovery using the Summon™ service’s exclusive match and merge process.
