East View Joins Summon™ Web-Scale Discovery, Boosting International Research: Preeminent cross-continental resource will become searchable through Summon™’s massive unified index

International research through Serials Solutions’ Summon™ web-scale discovery service is significantly expanding through an agreement with East View Information Services.

February 25, 2010 (TORONTO)—International research through Serials Solutions’ Summon™ web-scale discovery service is significantly expanding through an agreement with East View Information Services for content on its Universal Database platform, a key source for newspapers, scholarly journals, government publications, archival content, and business periodicals from Russia, China, and across Eurasia. As with the other 6,200+ content providers to the Summon™ service, East View will provide full text directly to Serials Solutions for inclusion in the service’s massive unified index, the only one of its kind.

“This is rich, diverse content and the Summon service will make the most of it,” said Jane Burke, Serials Solutions Vice-President and General Manager.  “A single, unified index is absolutely critical in ensuring search results are based solely on relevancy, not which database happens to aggregate your content. Summon will surface East View content at the right time and in the right context.”

The scope and specialization of the East View content is striking. It includes hundreds of mass media publications covering Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union, Chinese content such as the Jiefangjun Bao (People’s Liberation Army Daily,  the official newspaper of the military of the People’s Republic of China), demographic, bibliographic, and statistical resources, as well as leading scholarly journals from the Russian Academy of Sciences and other preeminent publishers in the humanities, sciences, and medical fields. The resources of East View, now discoverable within Summon™, include English-language publications as well as content in Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian, and an expanding variety of local languages.

While others are attempting to cobble together a discovery experience, the Summon™ service has succeeded by using an-all new technical architecture rather than by repurposing existing technology. The Summon™ service is built specifically to revolutionize libraries, enabling them to meet the expectations of net-gen users who find library searching complicated.

As a result, the Summon™ service has built a fast and loyal following among academic libraries seeking to improve their service. “We feel Summon is the best solution to date to address the ‘find articles’ problem, especially for undergrads,” said Greg Rashke, Associate Director for Collections and Scholarly Communication at North Carolina State University Libraries, where Summon is being implemented.

“We built Summon to be simple, fast, and easy for the user, but it’s so much more,” said Ms. Burke. “The Summon service upholds library standards of research integrity by delivering unbiased search results. It’s the only service of its kind that enables libraries to secure their position as the most credible source for research.”
