Serials Solutions Announces New Ulrich’s™ XML Data Service
Serials Solutions today announced the release of the Ulrich’s™ XML Data Service, a data retrieval service that provides a comprehensive set of Ulrich’s metadata to enhance the library’s local web services and improve patron experiences. The Ulrich’s XML Data Service delivers continuously updated serials and publisher information that libraries and other organizations can integrate into their homegrown and open-source applications.
Ulrich’s data can enhance a variety of library services including research tools, journal-awareness services, faculty web pages and course lists, and other patron-facing services. The data can also be used where there is a need for authoritative serials information in business applications. Subscribers can retrieve the XML data via the SOAP protocol in customized data sets tailored for the needs of the organization.
The Ulrich’s XML Data Service provides metadata for all of the serials in the Ulrich’s knowledgebase, which includes all publication types, formats, and frequencies. The new service completely replaces an existing raw data service that provided ASCII flat-file output with limited updating capability.
“Librarians have contacted Serials Solutions over the past year and requested that we build a robust delivery mechanism that allows the capture of large Ulrich’s data sets for use in their libraries’ web services,” says Yvette Diven, Senior Product Manager for Ulrich’s at Serials Solutions. “With this service, it’s now easy to get comprehensive data on demand to support serials projects of any size.”
Ms. Diven continues, “We chose a standards-based XML format for the data because it can be imported into many of the open source tools libraries are implementing. It will make Ulrich’s data much more developer-friendly than before.”
In addition to the data provided through the new service, Serials Solutions distributes source code for a simple example of a working client in the form of a C#.NET project. Subscribers of the Ulrich’s XML Data Service can use the client as-is, adapt it for their own storage needs, or use it as a template for implementing a client in their language of choice.
The Ulrich’s XML Data service is available through an annual subscription.
