Serials Solutions Says Participation in The OCLC eSerials Holding Service a Success

When OCLC launched its eSerials project in July 2006, Serials Solutions was the first U.S. company ready to offer this service to its customers. The cooperation between OCLC and Serials Solutions offers libraries an efficient way to contribute electronic serials holdings to WorldCat and ensure that these holdings are current, accurate and visible.

Today more than 80 Serials Solutions customers participate in the new program, representing about 80% of the total number of OCLC subscribers.

Using a file created by Serials Solutions, OCLC sets holdings for the electronic journal subscriptions of libraries. This information appears in WorldCat, OCLC’s online union catalog recently made available to the public at WorldCat.org.  Electronic serials holdings information is updated monthly using library-specific information provided to OCLC by Serials Solutions.

Serials Solutions co-founder Peter McCracken agreed to participate in OCLC’s pilot test of the service last year because he recognized the advantages to interlibrary loan departments and resource-sharing initiatives of having holdings information visible in WorldCat applications, such as OCLC FirstSearch and WorldCat Resource Sharing services.

There is no charge for Serials Solutions customers and OCLC members to participate in the program. It makes the library’s serials collection more visible to patrons and increases the usage of electronic resources. In addition, the service facilitates the library’s ability to control interlibrary loan requests among members of the OCLC cooperatives.
