Information access in today’s environment is abundant and complex. Academic libraries and the students they serve have a multitude of options when it comes to content, and yet, there are still barriers to access. Increasingly, libraries are faced with complex buying models that do not offer the content they require to support their vast curricula and research needs. This has led many libraries to prioritize solutions that offer affordability in a sustainable way: subscriptions. Among US libraries, for example, a large portion of library budgets go towards ongoing commitment to subscriptions, according to ACRL’s 2023 Annual Survey.
From the student perspective, having instant access has become the norm, with streaming platforms and digital media services promising unlimited access to a breadth of content. It can be challenging for libraries to keep pace with student demand, while also ensuring that their collections remain well-rounded with a variety of publishers and disciplines represented.
ProQuest, part of Clarivate, is leading the way in addressing these trends and needs with the launch of ProQuest Ebooks. With over 700,000 titles, ProQuest Ebooks offers the world’s largest subscription of high-quality, multidisciplinary scholarly ebooks, available on the award-winning Ebook Central platform. With ProQuest Ebooks, libraries can ensure simple, cost-effective, and uninterrupted access to valuable content essential for students’ academic success and learning.
Carefully curated by librarians, for librarians.
ProQuest Ebooks is built on a long tradition of high-quality, trusted ebook subscriptions for academic libraries. From our flagship Academic Complete subscription, to more specialized collections in mental health and sustainability, we have helped libraries expand access to authoritative ebook content for over 20 years, serving their users effectively and inclusively.
ProQuest Ebooks is carefully curated by a team of our in-house librarians and subject matter experts, ensuring relevant content is included with multidisciplinary coverage from a wide range of publishers. With content across 10 core disciplines, plus additional essential interdisciplinary titles, ProQuest Ebooks addresses curriculum trends, promotes bibliovariety and effectively supports students' supplemental needs and interests.
With ProQuest Ebooks your users will have access to award-winning titles, with representation from multiple languages, and plenty of DRM-free titles to ensure depth and breadth of accessible content. Without the hassle of single-title ownership or navigating complex purchase models, library staff can save valuable time to take on other projects and meaningful work for their communities.
Innovations to evolve with students
Access to broad, vetted academic content also serves another purpose: it ensures the ability of academic AI tools to deliver reliable outputs. AI-powered chatbots are becoming ubiquitous as a method of discovery for students and researchers, but not all are created equal—potentially exposing students to dangers such as bias and content hallucinations.
To address these concerns, we are also launching the Ebook Central Research Assistant, a tool powered by our Academic AI technology backbone, that guides students to effectively assess the relevance of each book, helping to review, analyze, and explore new ideas with ease. ProQuest Ebooks is enhanced with the Ebook Central Research Assistant, meaning students can expect reliable outputs on high-quality scholarly content with instant chapter insights, key concepts, and features that create deeper learning and enrich the research process.
Another non-negotiable for students? Access anytime, anywhere. The Ebook Central App provides secure on-the-go access, with accessibility features included to ensure all students have the support needed to improve their research outcomes.
A new era for ebooks
ProQuest Ebooks supports a new subscription-based access strategy for Clarivate, which aims to break down barriers through broad and affordable access to highly curated, trusted academic resources. As part of this transformative strategy and following changes in demand from libraries, Clarivate will phase out one-time perpetual purchases of print books and ebooks on Ebook Central. The OASIS marketplace will close at the end of 2025. The Rialto marketplace will remain with publisher-direct ebook platforms and will expand to offer enhanced collection development capabilities and workflows. All of these changes will take place throughout 2025, in close partnership with our librarian community. Please visit our support page to learn more about these changes and important dates.
We look forward to working with you as we embark on this journey to meet the evolving needs of libraries, students and researchers around the globe. Learn more about how ProQuest Ebooks can better support your users and unlock your library’s potential.
