 Dissertation: Black Women Confront Racism, Sexism in Richmond Shipyards During WWII

During World War II, Black women from the South flocked to the shipbuilding industry in Richmond for the great economic opportunities industrial jobs offered. What they found when they arrived and attempted to secure jobs hardly lived up to their dreams and expectations. They were faced with dual discrimination due to their race and gender. The shipyards and the union worked together to limit Black women’s employment opportunities, using residency requirements and a quota system to limit access to shipyard jobs.

 Journal Article: Moving Towards Anti-Racist Praxis in Medicine

Structural racism is associated with adverse health outcomes, such as poor healthcare quality and access, increased risk of preterm birth and low birthweight, and increased risk of cancer. This perpetuates health inequities through mechanisms including racial segregation, immigration policy and discriminatory incarceration. Practical steps to incorporate an anti-racist lens are needed to remedy structural racism in medicine.

Gender neutral parenting is a controversial childrearing style. It is used by parents who want to teach non-sexism and social justice to their children and is rooted in a desire to maintain a child’s individuality and offer more outlets for self-exploration. This thesis explores gender as a social construct, one that is oppressive to both boys and girls. It also discusses the lack of feminist community support to families raising their children in this way.
