The Calgary Herald, the largest and oldest daily newspaper in Alberta, Canada, has been named to Choice Magazine’s highly acclaimed Outstanding Academic Titles (OAT) list for 2021. The Calgary Herald Archive is part of ProQuest Historical Newspapers, now part of Clarivate, and includes a massive digital trove of more than 70 important newspapers from as early as the 1700s.

The archive was called “essential” by reviewer Jane C. Duffy. “The Calgary Herald Archive (CHA) is a primary resource that makes accessible the full text of this newspaper from its founding in 1883 to 2010,” wrote Duffy for ccAdvisor.

Duffy added that CHA makes all content “browsable and searchable through a linked suite of access points…such as subject, key word, article title, author, date, wildcards and truncation,” in addition to “advanced search aids such as field codes, source type, document type, and language.”

“The ability to limit searches to documents that contain words in [Indigenous] languages” will be “of special interest to Indigenous researchers,” as it “supports new and emerging streams of research in Native culture, decolonialization and reconciliation studies, and other streams of Indigenous inquiry,” Duffy said. Choice is a publication of the Association of College & Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. Its prestigious annual OAT list reflects the best scholarly titles reviewed by Choice and brings with it the extraordinary recognition of the academic library community.

The OAT list is quite selective: it contains approximately 10 percent of some 5,000 works reviewed in Choice each year. A complete list of winners was published for subscribers in Choice’s December 2021 issue.

Many ProQuest products have been named Choice Outstanding Academic Titles in previous years – including ProQuest One Academic, Social Sciences Premium Collection, the Digital National Security Archive, Academic Complete, and Queen Victoria's Journals (among others).
