Mental Illness Awareness Week Resources in eLibrary

Intro Copy

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), nearly 20% of American adults experienced mental illness in 2018, causing disruption and serious difficulties for millions of people. In 1990, Congress established Mental Illness Awareness Week to recognize the work of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in educating the public about mental illness and combatting the stigma that is still associated with it. MIAW is the first full week of October--in 2019, that is October 6-12. Do you discuss mental illness in your school, maybe in Health class or as part of a larger schoolwide program? If not, Mental Illness Awareness Week is the perfect opportunity to begin a conversation that can improve understanding and empathy and possibly improve the life of a young person. No matter how you approach the subject, you can send students to eLibrary to get the basics and more advanced information drawn from 2,100 sources, including 240 newspapers, more than 400 magazines and more than 500 scholarly journals, among other resources. Additionally, many mental health issues are included in eLibrary's Research Topics pages collection, which provides students an easy way to get information on thousands of topics. Here is a partial list of Research Topics related to mental illness: Mental Illness Mental Health Mental Depression Bipolar Disorder Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Schizophrenia Anxiety Disorders Personality Disorders Eating Disorders Seasonal Affective Disorder
