Recently, The Diary of a Young Girl was liberated of its copyright restrictions and has been published in its original Dutch version. Europe’s laws for copyright are different than those for the United States; the copyright expires for a European work 70 years after the death of its author. On January 1, 2016 (the beginning of the 71st year after Anne Frank was murdered in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945), two different people published the memoir online. The Anne Frank Fund is in strong opposition to this interpretation of the copyright law and is prepared to file lawsuits to keep the diary under copyright claiming it is a posthumously published work.
Over 30 million copies have been sold in 67 different languages; so, its access is already widespread. Regardless of what comes of the current news related to Anne Frank, installments of the diary, as well as related information, can be seen in ProQuest Historical Newspapers.
