Content Acquisition System for Libraries

Sponsored by Jay Nayegandhi, Director of Technology The ProQuest Coutts service provides a web-based system for Academic Research Libraries to search, select, and order print and electronic titles for their collections. Working with senior developers, you’ll have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in building tools and applications using web development and backend database technologies. Anticipated technologies could include: HTML/Javascript C#/.Net Progress database

Rialto Recommender

Sponsored by Jay Nayegandhi, Director of Technology Rialto is a ground-breaking marketplace enabling libraries to acquire content from a variety of publishers and platforms. We need a talented, innovative student to join the team responsible for delivering search and recommender functionality for this product. This project will Require working knowledge of Python (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas), and coursework or experience in machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, search, or recommender systems.

Discovery Service Improvements using OCR and AI

Sponsored by Vinay Bharadwaj, VP of Technology & Joseph Wyrembelski, Director of Technology ProQuest’s collections include a great many works preserved on microfilm. We’ll be working on a project to mine references using optical character recognition; document associations between the works in a graph database; and develop artificial intelligence to deliver more relevant recommendations to our users.

Platform Services Team Internship

Sponsored by Greg Kramer, Technology Manager and Dave Merkel, VP of Technology The Platform Services Team is responsible for building and maintaining the microservices that power ProQuest products. Our Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) handles over 100 calls/second, serving up content from our repository of over 1 billion documents. Keeping the service running is a challenge, and we’re looking for help! As an intern on our team, we’d like you to help us build a system to monitor the health and status of our products. This project could include: Creating a status dashboard that reports the status microservices across Amazon clusters Building a UI using a JavaScript framework Interfacing with our AWS cloud-hosted services to gather key metrics Bringing the functionality together using JavaScript, Python (or other scripting languages), and possibly Java programming when needed

AWS Billing Project

Sponsored by Andy Schmitt, VP of Enterprise Systems The technology team at ProQuest uses many Amazon Web Service (AWS) products. Each month, the team reviews usage and cost data. We have an opportunity to use other AWS tools such as Amazon Machine Learning (ML) and QuickSight to improve our monthly review process. By helping to visualize, analyze and predict usage data, we are hopeful that we will be able to better identify trends and anomalies.
