Serials Solutions®, a ProQuest® business, is working with NetAdvance to make content in JapanKnowledge discoverable via the Summon discovery service. Metadata for 13 reference titles from the largest and most reliable provider of Japanese-language content, including encyclopedias, dictionaries and citation indexes will be indexed and available to mutual subscribers of each company’s service.

Students and researchers worldwide will be able to discover authoritative Japanese general and cultural reference material alongside their library’s other resources. The addition of this content marks another step forward in offering academic institutions a discovery service with comprehensive coverage of Japanese-language materials in a single unified index.

"The solid reputation of NetAdvance and its highly valued content makes Summon even more useful for researchers to quickly discover authoritative Japanese-language materials," said John Law, vice president discovery services, Serials Solutions. "As libraries around the world adopt the Summon service, it is important that, in addition to driving forward innovative new features such as Summon 2.0, we continue to build and maintain a single index that delivers the most relevant coverage."

"We recognize scholars in Japan and around the world expect a discovery service to deliver a user experience that meets their expectations and provides access to content in multiple languages such as JapanKnowledge," said Masashi Tanaka, general manager, business center, NetAdvance. "Summon offers advanced native language searching capabilities and language-tuned relevancy for 17 languages that ensures relevant Japanese-language content will be discovered."

The Summon service is the first and only discovery service based on a single, unified index of content, leveraging its unique "match and merge" technology to combine rich metadata and full text from multiple sources to ultimately make items more discoverable. The Summon service index contains more than 1.1 billion items in which the vast majority of article and book content is full-text searchable.

Used by nearly 600 libraries in more than 40 countries, the Summon discovery service is proven to increase usage of library resources across a library's collection without bias to format, vendor or platform. With the recent introduction of Summon® 2.0 — groundbreaking features and a new, modern interface — the Summon service continues to deliver on its mission to return researchers to the library by providing a user experience that resonates with users familiar with open web search engines. Streamlined navigation and contextual guidance features significantly advance the research experience and provide greater opportunities for librarians to deliver value and scale their services to connect with more users.
