Universidad Complutense de Madrid Adopts Serials Solutions Services

Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest, announced today the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) has adopted the Summon™ web-scale discovery service.

Mar. 9, 2011 – Seattle – Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest, announced today the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) has adopted the Summon™  web-scale discovery service to improve the speed and accuracy of searching the breadth of its vast library collection. Librarians at UCM have also chosen to implement 360 Counter to gain better insight into the use of their library’s e-resources.

Founded in the 15th century, Universidad Complutense de Madrid is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Spain,  boasting more than 70,000 students and 6,000 teachers.  The UCM Library presently holds more than three million volumes, of which 200,000 are rare, antiquarian works of incalculable value. The UCM Library has made a clear commitment to the acquisition of digital content, with more than 35,000 electronic journals, 200 databases and thousands of e-books. UCM has also made a significant effort to create its own electronic collection by digitizing more than 100,000 books to be viewed online without restriction,  publishing UCM scientific journals online and organizing an e-prints server to deposit the results of research carried out at the University.

“Our researchers want accurate and relevant search results immediately, similar to the experience they have when looking up information using popular search engines,” said Manuela Moreno Mancebo,  assistant director of technical services and acquisitions for the Universidad Complutense de Madrid Library. “Given this, we knew we needed a discovery solution that was fast and simple to use. We also wanted a solution that offered researchers the ability to easily narrow and refine results. We are thrilled that we could easily integrate our proprietary resources and OPAC information into the Summon index to offer our researchers the most comprehensive search experience available.”

The Summon™  service enables a familiar, one-search-box starting point for fast and easy access to the full breadth of the UCM Library’s collections – from books and videos to e-resources at the article level – allowing researchers to find the most relevant information for their papers and presentations. Since the Summon™  service is offered as Software as a Service (SaaS), it is continuously updated,  allowing librarians to focus more time and energy on the information literacy of their researchers, and less on maintaining and troubleshooting their technology solutions.

“We already had such a positive experience working with the Serials Solutions customer service and technical support teams through the integration of 360 Core that it just made sense to evaluate other offerings from the company,” commented M. Moreno Mancebo.

UCM’s librarians chose 360 Counter to more effectively measure usage and report on its vast and growing collection. Explains M. Moreno Mancebo, “Our library has made a significant investment in the digital resources we offer. We think 360 Counter provides us with an agile and organized interface from which to easily manage and report on our return on investment.

“We are very pleased that a prestigious university such as UCM has chosen our comprehensive discovery and analytics services in order to further enhance its digital library experience for its patrons,” said Michael Gersch senior vice president and general manager of Serials Solutions.  “We are committed to helping libraries fulfill their missions and be the best partners to researchers in a rapidly changing environment by delivering world-class discovery and management services.”
