Publishing Technology Teams with the Summon™ Service

Publishing Technology, provider of the scholarly research platform IngentaConnect, has aligned with Serials Solutions’ Summon™ web-scale discovery service to index the full text of more than 250 scholarly publishers hosted on IngentaConnect.

Seattle, WA – July 9, 2009 Publishing Technology, provider of the scholarly research platform IngentaConnect, has aligned with Serials Solutions’ Summon™ web-scale discovery service to index the full text of more than 250 scholarly publishers hosted on IngentaConnect, increasing discoverability and producing more effective search results. The Summon™ service is a pioneer in providing single search box access to the breadth of library collections – from books and videos to e-resources at the article level.

Available commercially in July, the Summon™ web-scale discovery service overcomes what research shows is a fundamental barrier between libraries and users: the lack of a simple, obvious starting point for research. Users enter a search term in a library-branded search box and the Summon™ service instantly conducts a single search against pre-harvested content, enabling true relevancy-ranked results in one integrated list. The service provides simplicity for users and exposes the breadth of the library’s content, allowing more resources to be discovered.

Publishers and other contributors have embraced the Summon™ service for its ability to increase exposure of their data. Louise Tutton, Senior Vice President of Publishing Technology’s Scholarly Division commented, “Indexing the data available on IngentaConnect with the Summon service is yet another way for Publishing Technology to support our client publishers and promote their content. This alliance will provide more visibility and awareness of the vast scholarly research currently available on IngentaConnect.” Publishing Technology is the latest esteemed content provider to join this growing service. In addition to key content partners ProQuest and Gale – aggregators representing 4,700 publishers—the Summon™ service participants include LexisNexis, Springer, Taylor & Francis, SAGE, IEEE, Emerald, Scitation publishers, the Royal Society, scores of scholarly publishers and university presses, and more.

The Summon™ service was developed in close cooperation with library beta sites—partners in the service’s mission to bring the researcher back to the library and provide a channel for greater return on the library’s content investment. Beta sites include Dartmouth College, Oklahoma State University, University of Sydney, Claremont Colleges Library, University of Calgary, Western Michigan University, and University of Liverpool.

The Summon™ web-scale discovery service is hosted by Serials Solutions.
