ProQuest, an information and information technology business, announced plans to expand its presence in East Asia and appointed Boe Horton to lead the effort.  Mr. Horton has been named Senior Vice President and Managing Director, East Asia Pacific, and will relocate to Hong Kong during 2010.

“The East Asia region – China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea – is becoming a research and education powerhouse, with a growing population of students and researchers,” said Marty Kahn, ProQuest CEO.  “Boe has the in-depth knowledge and extensive international business experience that will enable ProQuest to build effective research solutions for this market.  We’re positioning ourselves for long-term growth in this region as part our continuing global expansion.

Beginning January 1, Mr. Horton will develop ProQuest’s East Asia Pacific strategy, leading sales and operations for the region.  He will also be responsible for establishing joint ventures, partnerships, and licensing agreements, as well as identifying new digital products and services for both Asian and Western markets

Mr. Horton has led groundbreaking research on the needs of scholars in Asia and expanded roles librarians on that continent can play in building wider audiences for their research.  He presented the findings of his research on Chinese scholars at the 2009 Charleston Conference and the CALIS meeting in China in May.  His research on Taiwanese scholars is a highlight of the CONCERT Conference in Taipei later this month.  The research is in addition to his role leading ProQuest’s Research Solutions Group – composed of Serials Solutions, RefWorks-COS and Dissertations – which has experienced consecutive, annual double-digit growth since 2007 when Mr. Horton began his tenure there.  Prior to this role, Mr. Horton headed strategy and integration during the merger of ProQuest Information and Learning and CSA.  He is also former Chief Operating Officer and General Manager for both CSA and Bowker.

“Over the past five years, I have been spending an ever increasing amount of my time in this fascinating and fast-growing region of the world,” said Mr. Horton.  “I’m excited to move ProQuest’s business to the next level as we make strategic investments in the East Asia region.  I’m confident in our ability to provide an ever greater level of service for not only libraries, but faculty, researchers, graduate students and undergrads.”
