Detroit Free Press Names ProQuest a Top Workplace

ProQuest, an Ann Arbor-based information and information technology company, is one of the 10 best large companies to work for, according to the Detroit Free Press.

ProQuest, an Ann Arbor-based information and information technology company, is one of the 10 best large companies to work for, according to the Detroit Free Press.  The Detroit daily newspaper partnered with Workplace Dynamics to identify the metro area’s “Top Workplaces in 2009” – those that stand-out as ethical, caring employers with good leadership and development opportunities for staff.  ProQuest was ranked eighth in the large company category.

“We’ve worked hard to create an innovative work environment that enables employees to continually develop their skills. We are fortunate in that our mission – providing indispensable research solutions that connect people and information – is one that we all quite passionately believe in. This recognition tells us we’re connecting with employees in very meaningful ways,” said Marty Kahn, ProQuest CEO. “What’s most significant to me is that this honor comes as a result of surveys of our employees. We value this kind of employee feedback and use it to shape our plans and programs.”

During the summer, Workplace Dynamics surveyed 420 ProQuest employees, 81% of the workforce at the company’s Ann Arbor headquarters. Employees were asked a series of questions designed to evaluate the company’s direction, ability to execute its business plan, leadership, career development, work conditions, and pay and benefits. They were also asked to assign an overall score – from 0 to 99 – for the company. Responses were compared to businesses across the region to determine which firms qualified as a “Top Workplace.”

ProQuest is best known for the creation of information tools and technologies that support research around the world in schools, libraries, universities and businesses. Last month, the company was ranked by InformationWeek magazine among the top 30 U.S. firms for innovative use of business technology. The workers in its Ann Arbor headquarters represent a diverse mix of jobs, including content experts of all types—from editors to librarians—as well as technologists, marketers and sales professionals. ProQuest is a mainstay of the Ann Arbor business environment and its employees are known for their community involvement.
