100+ Libraries Activate Article Linker as Bridge from Google Scholar to Their Collection

2005 news release regarding Serials Solutions' Article Linker adopting Google Scholar as an OpenURL-enabled source. Working in close collaboration with the Google Scholar team, Article Linker has enabled more than 100 libraries to link from Google Scholar to full-text content within their collection.

Serials Solutions announced the release and immediate, widespread adoption of Google Scholar as an OpenURL-enabled source for Article Linker, the industry’s leading hosted link resolver. Working in close collaboration with the Google Scholar team, Article Linker has enabled more than 100 libraries to link from Google Scholar to full-text content within their collection.

"Google Scholar offers a collection of full-text and non-full-text citations, with a focus on scholarly content," said J.R. Jenkins, MLIS, product manager for Article Linker at Serials Solutions. "Article Linker is the bridge that leads patrons from citations in Google Scholar to full text within the library’s collection. It plays a critical role introducing patrons to the full depth, breadth and richness of their library’s collection."

Susan MacArthur, Electronic Resources Librarian of Bates College, one of the participants in the original pilot project, said that Article Linker’s new enhancement "definitely adds value to Google Scholar. Using the links can certainly help students discover and make use of the quality resources we have already chosen for our collection…and that is very important."

As part of the collaboration with Google, Serials Solutions built proprietary activation and data transfer tools to streamline the process and ensure quality linking. Libraries can activate linking from Google Scholar with just a few mouse clicks in Serials Solutions’ Client Center. A customized XML file, designed and developed by Google and Serials Solutions, enables Google to highlight links if the full-text is known to be in the library’s collection. The creation and on-going maintenance of the XML files is handled by Serials Solutions so that Article Linker subscribers incur no additional work or cost.

"Our goal is to keep Article Linker at the forefront of OpenURL linking technology," said Steve McCracken, vice president of Serials Solutions. "This collaboration shows our commitment to lead the way in applying OpenURL technology for the benefit of librarians and their patrons, while shielding our subscribers from the burden of complex local configuration projects."
