Resources for Teaching About #MeToo

The hashtag has been shared over and over again on social media, in the news, and has helped to create an even more powerful movement

The 'me too' movement was founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke "to help survivors of sexual violence, particularly Black women and girls, and other young women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing." Then on Oct. 15, 2017, actress Alyssa Milano tweeted a request to her Twitter followers: "If you've been sexually harassed or assaulted write 'me too' as a reply to this tweet."

To be sure, your students are now aware of the issue, talking about it and wondering what it means for them. Maybe there have even been incidents at your school or in your community. On November 15, 2018, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos released new rules on federal Title IX guidance that change the way schools are required to handle claims of sexual assault and harassment. This post offers educators some resources for teaching students about #MeToo.
