Bridging the AI skills gap: A new literacy program for academic libraries

Clarivate teams with Choice to provide a fast and convenient course based on the ACRL AI Literacy Framework

In the rapidly evolving landscape of higher education, AI presents a key opportunity to libraries, reshaping how they operate, support research and serve their communities. Seizing that opportunity requires library colleagues to confidently and ethically engage with these technologies.

The 2024 Pulse of the Library survey revealed that more than 60% of academic libraries were planning or integrating AI into their services. A year on, even more libraries are likely to be in the midst of AI activity. However, the same survey highlighted a significant barrier: many library professionals feel underprepared to navigate the complexities of AI. From understanding generative models to evaluating ethical implications, the need for foundational AI literacy is urgent and growing.

To meet this need, Clarivate and LibTechInsights, from ACRL Choice, have partnered to launch a timely and practical solution: the AI Literacy Essentials for Academic Libraries micro-course. This free, eight-week program is designed specifically for academic library professionals who are curious about AI but short on time. It offers a flexible, self-paced learning experience grounded in the latest draft of the ACRL AI Literacy Framework.

Weekly, Bite-Sized Installments For Busy Professionals

The course is structured as a weekly series, with each installment delivering bite-sized content that builds on the previous week’s concepts. Participants can expect a mix of readings, multimedia resources, case studies and interviews with thought leaders in the field. Optional discussion questions and quizzes are included to foster community engagement and reinforce learning.

Here’s a preview of the weekly topics:

    • Week 1: Generative AI literacy for academic libraries
    • Week 2: The ethical implications of AI
    • Week 3: Creating policy around AI
    • Week 4: Creating and evaluating AI content
    • Week 5: Evaluating generative AI tools for academic workflows
    • Week 6: Communities of practice
    • Week 7: Assessing the social and legal impact of AI
    • Week 8: The future of generative AI in higher education

Each module is crafted by academic library professionals, ensuring the content is both relevant and actionable. Whether you’re drafting AI policies, exploring new tools or simply trying to keep up with the pace of change, this course provides a solid foundation.

Why AI Literacy Matters Now

The AI skills gap isn’t just a workforce issue — it’s a service issue. Libraries are increasingly expected to guide students and faculty through the ethical use of AI, support AI-enhanced research and integrate AI into discovery and metadata workflows. Without a shared understanding of core AI concepts, library teams risk misapplying tools in ways that compromise trust and equity.

This micro-course empowers library teams to become informed participants in their institution’s AI journey. It also aligns with broader professional development goals, offering a certificate of completion that can be shared with supervisors or added to a CV.
