La competición Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) se originó en Queensland, Australia. La idea surgió en un momento en que el estado de Queensland estaba sufriendo una severa sequía. Para conservar el agua, se animó a los residentes a cronometrar sus duchas, y muchas personas tenían un temporizador de huevos de tres minutos fijado a la pared en su baño.
