Exploring Cultural Perspectives, One Page at a Time

For researchers in the history of race and ethnicity in North America and beyond, the ethnic press is integral to exploring the diverse perspectives, experiences, and culture of specific ethnic communities.

This collection contains the backfiles of more than thirty 20th- and 21st-century magazines each aimed at ethnically specific audiences. Ranging from political titles to publications concerned with arts, fashion, beauty, and identity, the collection reflects diverse voices and gives insight into cultural perspectives, societal shifts, and historical events. Titles are presented in color page-image format with article-level metadata and searchable text.

This collection complements traditional scholarly resources by offering a rich primary source archive of largely untapped publications from communities including African American, Latinx, Asian, and indigenous, as well as publications reflecting the European immigration to the US from the 19th century forward.

Major titles include:

  • Arab-American Almanac
  • Black Beauty & Hair
  • Black Heritage
  • Black Masks
  • Creole Magazine
  • Flamingo
  • Journal of the Hellenic Diaspora
  • La Herencia del Norte
  • Polish American Journal
  • Positively Filipino
  • Pulse
  • Sepia
  • The Reporter
  • Whispering Wind

*Due to the rarity of some of the original print volumes, there are gaps (issues or pages) in the runs of some publications.
