David Mamet's Plays take Centre Stage in ProQuest's Twentieth-Century Drama Collection

Honored with the Award of Merit from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1993, Mamet is one of the great American playwrights of the 20th Century. His works often focus on what the New York Times called the ‘back-slapping, back-stabbing rituals of males at work and play’ and are characterised by his distinctive use of rhythms and musicality of everyday speech, as well as the in-depth exploration of the dramatic potential of the ways people use words to deceive themselves and others.
Twentieth Century Drama includes not only Mamet’s most celebrated works -- such as American Buffalo (1976), Speed-the-Plow (1987), Oleanna (1992) and the Pulitzer Prize winning Glengarry Glen Ross (1984) – but also his early one-act plays such as Duck Variations (1971) and Sexual Perversity in Chicago (1974). Twentieth-Century Drama now contains 1,700 plays by more than 170 different authors. Upon completion in 2009 the collection will contain 2,600 play texts, covering the history of modern drama from the 1890s to the present day. Twentieth-Century Drama may be licensed separately or as an add-on module to Literature Online.
