Teach National Poetry Month with eLibrary

April is National Poetry Month, an annual event started by the National Academy of Poets in 1996 to “highlight the extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of American poets; encourage the reading of poems; [and] assist teachers in bringing poetry into their classrooms.” Here are a few ways eLibrary can help your students explore the world of poetry. -Start with an overview of poetry with the Poetry Research Topic. Just search "poetry" and the Research Topic will be the first item you see in the results. -Find Research Topics on individual poets. eLibrary has many Research Topics dedicated to poets and writers from the past and present. In addition to the examples below, you can find many others just by searching a poet’s name: -Find Research Topics on genres and movements: eLibrary has many pages devoted to specific groups of poets or literary art/movements, including these: As mentioned above, all of these Research Topics can be found by simply searching, with the page you are looking for usually appearing right at the top. Another way to find pages--maybe if you are unsure of what you are looking for--is to browse, starting with the All Research Topics section at the bottom of the home screen. Click on an icon and refine the results as you go. -Find poems in eLibrary. Find contemporary poetry by searching for specific publications like The American Poetry Review, Parnassus: Poetry in Review and Poetry. Just type PUB(American Poetry Review) or use any other title to see results from a single publication. (Make sure you leave no spaces between PUB and the parenthesis.) eLibrary has a lot to offer for National Poetry Month, so get your students started today!
