The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge is the oldest national scientific academy in the world with a continuous existence. The origins of the Royal Society date back to 1645, when a group of eminent British thinkers began to meet regularly in London to discuss the new, experimental philosophies of science. They recognized the need to arrive at a fuller understanding of these innovative ideas through open dialogue. One of the founders of the Royal Society, Robert Boyle played a seminal role in the development of English science from the 1660s until his death in 1691. yet, while Boyle's many published works are well known, his unpublished papers have remained virtually unexplored. The Boyle letters comprise seven guardbooks of correspondence dating from the 1640s until Boyle's death. Many of the items in this collection are published here for the first time.
