Part 1 of The Black Power Movement reproduces the large personal collection of Dr. Komozi Woodard, a Baraka comrade who served the movement in numerous roles. These roles included the head of economic development for Kawaida Temple in Newark; editor of Unity and Struggle, the organ of the Congress of African People; and ultimately leading academic scholar of Baraka_s political career. The collection covers Baraka_s career from his involvement in the Black Arts movement in the mid-1960s through Baraka_s nationalist and Marxist periods. The collection consists of rare works of poetry, organizational records, print publications, over one hundred articles, poems, plays, or speeches by Baraka, a small amount of personal correspondence, and oral histories.
