This collection covers the achievements of Sargent as a journalist and Whig politician, and discloses the depth of accurate detail attributable to a literary mind. Approximately half of the set contains correspondence with such people as Millard Fillmore, Horace Greeley, Henry Clay, and others. There are also letters from William Cullen Bryant and Oliver Wendell Holmes.
Sargent's interest in Harvard University, his involvement in various legal cases and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings concerning the Civil War and the abolition of slavery add an important historical dimension to Sargent's writings.
Titles from the Massachusetts Historical Society Collections may be purchased by individual reel.
