Overview
The Theatre Museum, London has the finest collection of British playbills and programmes in the world, those from the nineteenth century covering the entire spectrum of theatrical entertainment in the capital from straight drama, opera and ballet to melodrama, circus and music hall. Such a complete run of nineteenth-century playbills and programmes is a unique resource reflecting the entire history of the London theatre from the year 1801 when Sheridan was still at Drury Lane to 1900 when audiences were being shocked by the plays of Ibsen. Arrangement by theatre in chronological order highlights the gradual change in size and style of the playbills and their transformation into the modern theatre programme.
