`. . . this is an important tool for anyone embarking on research in British and American history and literature. Approaching a project in these fields without consulting the Houghton catalogue is unwise.'
Philip N. Cronenwett, Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America

136,000 entries describe a remarkable collection of manuscripts. Five or six miles of shelving hold millions of manuscripts dating from 3,000 BC to the present. While the collection is strong in mediaeval and renaissance manuscripts, missionary records, and radical and East European political archives, Houghton's broad strength in American and European literary manuscripts is probably unmatched.
