Earlier this month I attended the Library Marketing and Communications Conference (LMCC) in Dallas, TX. The energetic attendees came from large and small academic, public and special libraries. The sessions included lively discussion and time was built in between sessions for networking. To encourage networking during the first day’s lunch each table focused on a specific topic, such as social media or graphic design.
The first keynote was given by David Lee King. He started his presentation asking “…has everyone in your library embraced the social web?” He presented three ways to transform into a “face 2 face” library:
1. Listening to customers
2. Using a “Business casual” communication style
3. Doing community
King closed remarking, “Creating great customer connections starts with you.”
Yolanda Cuesta opened the second day with a keynote about diversity. She described a person’s diversity like an iceberg. We see the top of the iceberg, such as the way a person dresses, but under the surface are a person’s values and beliefs. Cuesta shared four principles for libraries in diverse communities:
1. Know who you want to reach
2. Offer services the customer needs
3. Tell customers what the service does for them
4. Make an emotional connection
The presentation concluded with a simple, yet profound statement, “I’m not different than you. I’m different like you.”
LMCC included so many informative sessions on topics from demographics to social media. I am looking forward to 2016!
