Celebrating Milestones: 2014 Marks the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

The passage of the Civil Rights Act was a landmark triumph for one of America's greatest reform movements—the struggle for racial equality. When President Lyndon Johnson signed it into law on July 2, 1964, segregation was ended in public swimming pools, libraries, schools, theaters, restaurants, and hotels; and it forbade discriminatory practices in employment.
