For the first time ever, this spring, ProQuest was invited to speak at the LibrAsia conference, which is an international and interdisciplinary conference aimed at bringing together academics and practitioners to discuss research and discovery in literature and librarianship. This year it took place in early April, in Osaka, Japan.

Conita Leung, ProQuest's Digital Publishing Director, presented a comparative survey on the changing role of librarian in Mainland China and Taiwan at this year's conference.  The presentation includes two qualitative surveys conducted in 2013 in Mainland China and Taiwan on how librarians view their role in the changing landscape of librarianship.

In China, the survey was conducted in conjunction with China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS) and Digital Resources Acquisition Alliance of Chinese Academic Libraries (DRAA). The Taiwan survey was done in collaboration with Consortium on Core Electronic Resources in Taiwan (CONCERT) and National Taiwan Normal University.

The surveys covered five main areas: consultation, communication, layout, training and development, and special collections. Detailed results of the surveys will be shared in the near future to shed light on the evolving experiences of the library profession in China and Taiwan.
