We occasionally invite librarians to visit our office in Seattle and share with our staff how they are using our services to improve management and discovery at their library. Our most recent visitors came from the University of British Columbia (UBC) Library to discuss how they are integrating the suite of Serials Solutions services into their existing workflows and the future direction of their library.

Our visitors from UBC Library highlighted the need to have Serials Solutions comprehensive and flexible suite of solutions to accommodate their vast collection (including 1 million e-books and 212,000 print/electronic serial titles) and handle increasing interactions, both in-person and virtually, with their users (including 4 million in-person visits, 6.2 million visits to the website, 11.6 million e-book/e-journal transactions). During their presentation, they focused on the following topics:

  • Resource Management Workflows: Discussed how Serials Solutions ERM service (360 Resource Manager) played a part in the university’s 2013 Licensing Reanalysis Project
  • Access Management Workflows: Shared how they incorporated locally hosted e-books into the Serials Solutions knowledgebase to improve the end user experience and create access through their OPAC, 360 Link and the Summon service
  • Course Reserves Workflows: Provided details on how they use the Summon API in context with their course reserves

Insight to UBC Library’s immediate and future challenges was best exemplified by the following comment by Paul Joseph (Systems Librarian), during the Q&A at the conclusion of the presentation: “We are immersed in the electronic world, moving our collections away from print and transferring much of our physical items to storage. It’s important that management systems like 360 and Intota keep up with our needs. Like many other academic libraries, it’s all about the E.”

We extend our sincere appreciation to Paul Joseph, Teresa Lee (e-Resource & Access Librarian), and Lorne Madgett, (e-Resource & Access Library Specialist) for taking the time to visit with us and share with us “real-life” stories of how a library leverages and benefits from our services. We appreciate and respect the energy and support you bring to your job on a daily basis, and value your feedback on how we can improve our services to help you more.
