With the largest public research collection in the state, the University of Connecticut Libraries is the campus community’s primary source for scholarly information. The breadth and depth of its collection and growing array of electronic resources created a challenge for users to access the ever-increasing universe of information.

The library recognized the need to streamline the management of e-resources by consolidating all management tools on a single platform. To this end, the library initiated a trial of 360 Link.  Within a few weeks, users had access to full-text resources and library staff enjoyed an integrated solution that was much easier to maintain and manage.

Building upon the success of the trial, the libraries wanted to expand their single search box capabilities and consolidate what previously were multiple search activities by functioning as a library catalog, a journal locator, a database locator, and a large full-text article repository. The implementation of the Summon service enabled users to quickly and efficiently discover content in the libraries vast collection.

Dubbed “Everything @ UConn,” the Summon service search box is the first thing users see on the homepage of the libraries’ website and allows them to begin their research easily, and if they wish, refine their search by targeting either scholarly journal and newspaper articles, books, videos, maps, manuscript collections, music scores and more. With the adoption of the new service, users will also be able to search a number of resources held in the HathiTrust Digital Library, further enhancing the teaching and learning that occurs throughout the University. 

The University of Connecticut is one of the growing number of ARL member libraries that have adopted the Summon service. Most frequently libraries experience an increase in usage of their resources.
